![]() It’s a very nice nose, all in all, suggesting a rich, fruity and spice-forward whiskey. I’m getting clove and cinnamon, ribboned with caramel and raisin, mingling with charred oak and traces of chocolate. Regardless, the nose on this Old Charter Oak batch is distinctive and immediately engaging, with assertive notes of spice and lots of dark dried fruitiness. It’s kind of odd that this wasn’t a cask that previously was used to mature sherry, because it looks for all intents and purposes like a heavily sherried scotch that has really tinted itself with the fortified wine. Just looking at this bourbon in a glass, the ruddy amber color suggests a very intense interaction between the spirit and the barrel. So with that said, let’s get to tasting Spanish Oak Bourbon. The Old Charter Oak series intends to give a certain degree of novelty, and you have to acknowledge that it has delivered on that front. Suffice to say, few drinkers will ever have sampled a bourbon matured this way before I certainly haven’t. Those used sherry casks are then often used for the secondary maturation of scotch whisky, rum or increasingly for American whiskey, but this would be an entirely different use of the Spanish oak–not as reused oak that has matured sherry, but as a newly charred barrel. Sherry is of course the market one can’t help but think about here, as this oak species is heavily used in the aging of fortified wines in regions such as Spain and Portugal. We were curious how those flavors would impact the taste of whiskey, and we are very pleased with the result.” ![]() We specifically wanted to test Spanish Oak as part of this collection because of its connection to sherry, which is known to be a nuttier, fruitier spirit. Meaning drier, spicier notes and flavors like clove are imparted onto the liquid. Our Spanish Oak, on the other hand, has more eugenol. Resulting in bourbon with a softer, sweeter taste and notes of vanilla and caramel. American Oak has higher proportions of vanillin and whiskey lactone. “The whiskey extracts from the charred oak barrel exciting elements like eugenol, vanillin and whiskey lactone. Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley describes the particular, unique character of Spanish oak as the following: As the brand puts it, “Harvested from the forests of northern Spain, the trees used in this year’s experiment were made into staves that were seasoned outdoors before becoming the aging vessels for this unique whiskey.” The fifth release in the Old Charter Oak series was bottled at 46% ABV (92 proof), with an MSRP of $70. This is non-age stated (but probably decently mature) bourbon from Buffalo Trace, matured entirely in newly charred barrels made from the species of Spanish oak known as Quercus Hispanica. ![]() Its fifth is just hitting store shelves: Old Charter Oak Spanish Oak Bourbon. That’s a huge potential variation in flavors one can attain from wood aging, and this theory is at the heart of Buffalo Trace’s experimental Old Charter Oak series of whiskey releases, which has previously dabbled in four past releases: Mongolian Oak, Chinkapin Oak, Canadian Oak, and French Oak. But American and French oak are just the tip of the iceberg–there are more than 125 species of white oak on record, and despite the common misconception, any of them can actually be legally used to create newly charred barrels for the production of bourbon whiskey. Suffice to say, we mainly encounter a single species of American white oak (Quercus Alba) in the whiskey industry, although bourbon geeks with more experience will be familiar with at least a few, such as the French oak (several species) long used in wine and brandy production that has become a popular finishing barrel for American whiskeys as well. ![]() American whiskey geeks could be forgiven for thinking that there’s some magical, worldwide species of tree simply known as “the oak,” growing on every continent of the Earth. ![]()

In how many ways can three cars finish in first, second and third place The order in which the cars finish is important. ![]() The above means that there are 120 ways that we could select the 5 marbles where order matters and where repetition is not allowed. Assuming that all nickels are similar, all dimes are similar, and all quarters are similar, we have permutations with similar elements. Let’s look at a simple example to understand the formula for the number of permutations of a set of objects. Refer to the factorials page for a refresher on factorials if necessary. Where n is the number of objects in the set, in this case 5 marbles. If we were selecting all 5 marbles, we would choose from 5 the first time, 4, the next, 3 after that, and so on, or: For example, given that we have 5 different colored marbles (blue, green, red, yellow, and purple), if we choose 2 marbles at a time, once we pick the blue marble, the next marble cannot be blue. We can confirm this by listing all the possibilities: 11įor permutations without repetition, we need to reduce the number of objects that we can choose from the set each time. When a permutation can repeat, we just need to raise n to the power of however many objects from n we are choosing, so Like combinations, there are two types of permutations: permutations with repetition, and permutations without repetition. Permutations can be denoted in a number of ways: nP r, nP r, P(n, r), and more. ![]() This includes the creation and placement of custom brackets and wires. Lingual braces, which attach to the backside of your teeth, can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $13,000. Often, orthodontists replace a couple of broken brackets without an extra charge, but if it happens too often, you might have to pay extra. ![]() Since they’re made from ceramic materials, the brackets are prone to breakage, too. However, they are a bit slower-working than metal braces, with cases often taking 18 to 36 months. The total cost includes placement of all brackets and wires, scheduled adjustments and removal at the end of treatment.Ĭeramic braces are a popular choice because they use tooth-colored or clear brackets instead of metal ones. Ceramic bracesĬeramic braces are a bit pricier, costing $4,000 to $8,500, depending on how often you have to come in for bracket replacements. If you need larger teeth rotated or moved in precise ways, then you’re likely better off getting standard metal braces. Otherwise, they work the same as traditional metal braces, which means most people can expect to get straight teeth in one to two years. They are also easier to keep clean, helping reduce your risk of cavities throughout the treatment process. The brackets are much less visible as a result, especially when you select the clear option. Instead of holding the archwire onto the metal brackets with a rubber band, self-ligating braces use brackets with a spring-loaded door. Self-ligating bracesīecause they’re largely the same as standard metal braces, self-ligating braces also cost in the range of $3,000 to $7,000. The main drawback of metal braces is that they are difficult to hide when you smile, but many people find the quick fix well worth it. You can expect a standard treatment to take between one and two years, depending on how far out of position your teeth are. The wires are then tightened at each appointment to pull your teeth into the right positions across the treatment period. ![]() The metal brackets attach to the front of the teeth using glue/bonding cement and firmly hold the wires in place. Standard metal braces use brackets and archwires to gradually pull your teeth into the proper positions. Average treatments cost $5,000 to $6,000, including the placement of the braces, any adjustments and removal at the end of treatment. If your orthodontist recommends standard metal braces, your price should generally fall in the $3,000 to $7,000 range. Your orthodontist will assess your treatment needs and help you decide between all your options, including standard metal braces, self-ligating braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces and clear aligners. ![]() At-home clear aligners are often the most affordable option because they are relatively cheap to make and don’t require in-person orthodontic visits. Lingual braces, which require precise placement and extra care, cost the most of all types. Traditional metal braces cost $5,000 to $6,000, on average. There is wide variation in the cost of braces - mainly based on the type of treatment. You can then choose one that aligns with your preferences and budget. After performing a thorough examination and taking images or impressions, your orthodontist can let you know which options should provide your desired results. The right type of braces for a given situation depends on the wearer’s teeth and jaw. ![]()
